And ironically it’s for a historical novel, that’s based at the time of a pandemic!

Emma Donoghue and a list of 13 others, including Thomas King, will find out in a couple of months if their publication has been voted the best in Canada.

Donoghue, who makes her home here in London, has been nominated for a historical novel called “The Pull of the Stars,” that is set during a pandemic. Her most famous work to date is the world-renowned novel “Room”, which she also adapted to a screenplay for the hit movie of the same name. In an ironic twist, the stage production of “Room,” which was supposed to premiere at the Grand Theatre this past March, had to be cancelled the day of, when everyone suddenly went into Covid lockdown.

Thomas King has been nominated for “Indians on Vacation.”  King is also known for the non-fiction “The Inconvenient Indian”.  A documentary based on that book is premiering this week at TIFF.

We’ll know in a couple of months. The Giller Prize, and the he $100,000prize that goes with it, will be announced in November.
