Student in Oxford, Middlesex, Elgin and Perth counties can help Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario build homes by entering the Meaning of Home Contest

Meaning of Home is a national writing contest for students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada. Students are invited to submit a poem or essay on what home means to them

 

WHEN

  • The contest is accepting submissions until February 21, 2020 (last day)
  • Winners will be announced in May 2020

WHY

  • Three grand prize winners (one from each grade) will receive a $30,000 grant to be directed to the local Habitat build of their choice
  • Nine runners up (three from each grade) will win a $10,000 grant towards a local Habitat build
  • Every student entry earns a $10 donation towards that student’s local Habitat for Humanity
  • Founded by Genworth Canada in 2007, the Meaning of Home contest has raised over $1.5 million dollars towards helping build decent and affordable housing in communities across Canada, and has inspired 58,000 students to learn more about the issue of affordable housing.
  • In 2015 John Latosinsky, a Grade 6 student from London, won the Meaning of Home Contest and directed $25,000 of his donation to a home for Habitat Heartland!
  • This is an opportunity for students to give back to their community in an engaging and meaningful way

WHERE/HOW:

  • Submissions can be made by mail or online
  • Teachers or parents who are interested in having their Grade 4, 5 or 6 students participate can also access an educational module online at ca that includes writing tips and information on affordable housing issues in Canada.
