Researchers at Western University have developed an E.coli testing kit that, once fully implemented, could drastically cut down on produce recalls like the one currently affecting romaine lettuce.
The new test kit detects a protein unique to the E.coli bacteria and can show results in under 24 hours. Current testing methods involve samples being sent to labs for testing. this lengthy process allows the produce to be shipped and then requires major recalls if the tests are positive. The new kits would allow testing in the processing plants.
The kits have been approved by Health Canada and are currently making their way to food processing plants across the continent.
