Hello hungry Easy 101.3 listener.  Here’s the recipe I promised.  If you can make a grilled cheese, or French toast, you can make this.  Enjoy!

 

Cathy’s Monte Cristo

 

2 slices of bread (Challah or egg bread works really well)

2 slices of ham

1 slice of cheese (Swiss or Jarlsberg are my favourites in this)

1 egg, beaten

Grainy mustard

strawberry or raspberry jam or jelly

powdered sugar (optional)

1 tablespoon of butter

 

Break egg into a shallow dish, add a couple of tablespoons of water, and beat.  Set aside.

Heat a frying pan over medium high heat, and add butter to melt.

Spread a thin amount of grainy mustard on one slice of bread, top with ham and cheese.  Spread second slice of bread with jam or jelly and place bread, jam side down, on top of the sandwich.

Dip sandwich in egg mixture, soaking both sides.

When frying pan is heated, fry sandwich for several minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Remove from pan, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with a little extra jam or jelly on the side.

 

A salad is great with this, and helps to balance out the sweetness.
