Starting today artificial trans fats are expected to be officially banned. The move comes 15 years after a majority of MP’s voted over the years.

Health Canada will add partially hydrogenated oils on the list of Contaminants and other Adulterating Substances.

You can find trans fats in pastries, fries, other baked goods and packaged goods to extend its shelf life.

The ban will apply to all foods produced for sale in the country, including imported products and foods prepped in restaurants and fast food chains.

Research shows that this ban could prevent 12,000 heart attacks over a 20 year period in Canada.

Retailers will be given a grace period of up to three years to clear the inventory on store shelves.
